When to Replace Your Garage Door Sensor

Garage door sensors detect obstructions in the door’s path. Various sensors exist, with a prevalent type being the photo-eye sensor. It has two parts that resemble little security cameras. The sensors sit on each side of garage door frames and use infrared beams to detect obstructions.

Should this mechanism become faulty, some useful tips will help you determine if replacing it is necessary. If you need additional support in Cincinnati, Ohio, or Northern Kentucky, AE Door & Window garage door technicians will be happy to help you repair or replace your garage door sensor.

What Causes Garage Door Sensors to Fail?

Multiple factors may cause sensor failure, but you can take steps to prevent or fix some of these issues. If you are wondering when to replace your garage door sensor, the examples below will help you problem-solve and decide whether to call for professional assistance.

  • Alignment issues: Sensors must be at the same height and angle. Bumps, vibrations and shifts over time can cause misalignment and sensor failure.
  • Dirty lenses: Dust, debris and cobwebs can obscure lenses and cause malfunctions. Cleaning your sensors will extend their life span.
  • Environmental factors: Your sensors are exposed to the elements, and sunlight and humidity can damage them. Similarly, exposure to wet and cold can cause sensors to fail.
  • Wiring problems: Wires connect sensors to the garage door opener and power source. Over time, wiring can corrode or become loose, leading to connectivity issues and sensor failure.

Signs of a Broken Garage Door Sensor

If you have checked for fixable issues like dirty lenses or accidentally unplugging the sensor from the power source, there are a few more ways to determine if your sensor is broken.

  • The door will open but not close: This may mean your sensor is registering an obstruction. Double-check to make sure there is nothing in the door’s path. If there is no obstruction and it will not close, your sensor is likely malfunctioning.
  • Blinking lights: If just one of your sensor lights is flashing, your sensors may be misaligned. Consult your manual to determine what your lights should look like and how to resolve the issue. If it is not a misalignment issue, flashing red lights may indicate a broken garage door sensor.

When Should You Repair Your Garage Door Sensor?

Misalignment can often be fixed through sensor adjustment. The photo eyes must point in the same direction at the exact same angle. If you suspect an alignment issue, try using a screwdriver to tighten the bracket holding up the sensor with a blinking light until it is perfectly aligned with the other one. Usually, once aligned, the blinking lights should stop.

To ensure you have resolved the issue, stack cardboard boxes below the door at the sensors’ height, and close the door. If it begins to close and then reopens, it has detected the obstruction, and your sensor is working. If it crushes the boxes, you have a more serious problem. In this case, it’s time to call garage door technicians from a trusted company like AE Door & Window.

When You Should Replace Your Garage Door Sensor

Many factors can interfere with your garage door sensor. Checking for these possible issues will help you determine whether replacement is necessary.

  • Power supply issue: If your sensor’s lights aren’t working, inspect your power supply. The fix may be as simple as making sure the power cord is plugged in or ensuring the plugs have not tripped. Sometimes, the problem is more complex, such as a frayed wire causing the issue. If this is the case, it’s best to call professionals for a repair or replacement service.
  • Interference: Sun rays can temporarily prevent the door from closing because sensors utilize infrared beams to detect obstructions, and ultraviolet light can interfere. While simply installing a sun shield might solve the issue, continued sun exposure can damage sensors beyond repair, calling for a replacement.
